AS Roma Players Share Insights Amid Club Crisis

In the face of adversity, AS Roma players Niccolò Pisilli and Mario Hermoso highlight resilience and leadership, believing in their ability to turn around the season amidst challenges on both domestic and European fronts.

AS Roma is currently facing a deepening crisis, as the team continues to slide down the Serie A standings and struggles to make an impact in European competitions. However, two pivotal players from the squad have shared their thoughts and offered hope for what lies ahead. Niccolò Pisilli and Mario Hermoso, both crucial to the club's ambitions, spoke openly about Roma's challenges, the recent appointment of Claudio Ranieri, and the significant responsibility that the veteran members of the team hold in guiding the club back to a successful path.

During the Beppe Viola Award event, young talent Niccolò Pisilli maintained a calm demeanor despite Roma’s difficult performance. Although the league standings are not very promising, Pisilli emphasized that the circumstances, while not ideal, still present plenty of opportunities to improve. Roma still has a chance to qualify for European football next season, and their participation in three major competitions indicates that there is still a lot at stake.

“The standings are not where we wish them to be, but there's still sufficient time to strive for a spot in Europe. We are competing in three tournaments, which keeps our hopes alive. The coach prepared us extensively for the match against Napoli; however, things did not unfold as we had hoped. Nevertheless, I’m thankful for the opportunity to play, and I believe we demonstrated the right mindset. Our focus was on maintaining a clean sheet and functioning as a unified team.”

Pisilli demonstrates a clear confidence in both the team and the coach. Despite this, the young midfielder is not perturbed by ongoing contract talks, believing that those matters can be addressed in due time. His primary focus remains on the game itself.

‘I'm not worried about my contract. That will be addressed when the time is right. My main priority at the moment is solely on the matches. I enjoy a strong relationship with the club, and my agent will handle the specifics.’

Conversely, Mario Hermoso, who is currently out due to injury, provided a more serious perspective on Roma's difficulties. During a recent event at Triburtina station, Hermoso highlighted that even the most successful teams can experience downturns, referencing the recent struggles of Manchester United as an example.

“Even the top teams can face difficult periods, such as Manchester United. It’s challenging when we’re not firing on all cylinders, both physically and mentally. However, as experienced players, it's our duty to return to our optimal form. We bear the greatest responsibility for the current situation Roma is in.”

Hermoso highlighted the crucial role of leadership during challenging moments. Although Roma's younger players have significant talent, they are still in the process of adapting to the pressures associated with top-level competition. Consequently, it is the responsibility of the experienced players to lead the team through this difficult phase.

'We need to rise to the occasion and assist Ranieri in reversing the course of this season. This situation is not solely focused on us as players; it involves everyone connected to Roma, including the staff and supporters. While the younger players might experience pressure, it is our responsibility as seasoned veterans to guide them through this challenging time.'

Hermoso is currently concentrating on his recovery. Having been out for five weeks because of an injury, the Spanish defender is keen to make his return, yet he recognizes the importance of being completely fit before getting back on the field.

"I am eager to get back on the field as soon as I can, but the medical team is dedicated to making sure I am in optimal condition. I have been sidelined for five weeks now, and although I am hopeful to return soon, it might take another week or two before I am completely fit."
