Deco, former Barcelona star and current sporting director, shares insights on Gavi and Pedri's contract negotiations, highlighting their dedication to the club and the vital role they play in Barcelona's future ambitions.
In an insightful interview with Mundo Deportivo, Deco, the ex-Barcelona star and current sporting director, gave a comprehensive overview of the ongoing contract discussions for two of the club's brightest young talents: Gavi and Pedri. The Brazilian shared important perspectives on the future of these players, both of whom play a pivotal role in Barcelona’s long-term strategy under manager Hansi Flick.
After a long recovery from a knee injury, Gavi is slowly regaining his form on the field. Despite this challenge, Deco is optimistic about the 20-year-old midfielder's significant contribution to Barcelona's midfield this season. Deco believes that Gavi truly represents the core values of Barcelona—his dedication, enthusiasm, and footballing acumen make him not just a vital asset for the present, but also a foundational player for the future.
"Gavi is exceptional," Deco asserted with conviction. "His character, his drive—he possesses all the qualities a top footballer should have. At just 20, he plays with the maturity of someone much older, demonstrating the poise of a player in their mid-20s." Deco believes Gavi’s development at Barcelona is destined to happen, as the club's focus on youth reflects its desire to stay competitive at the highest levels, with rising stars like Gavi, Lamine Yamal, and Dani Olmo prepared to spearhead the team in the coming years.
Regarding Gavi's contract situation, Deco disclosed that although the midfielder's current contract extends until 2026, he is hopeful that a long-term renewal is forthcoming. He draws comparisons between Gavi's loyalty to the club and that of his teammate Pedri, who has also shown a strong commitment to remaining at Barcelona in the near future. Deco believes that when players are wholeheartedly dedicated, contract discussions tend to progress smoothly.
“The player's desires are what truly matter,” Deco stated. “When a player is dedicated, it’s only a matter of time. I believe there’s no better place for Gavi than Barcelona, and like Pedri, I am confident he wishes to remain here for the long run.”
Renewing Pedri’s contract is also a key focus for Barcelona, with Deco indicating that the conversations are going well. After overcoming a series of injuries, Pedri has returned to peak form and is eager to leave his legacy at Barcelona. Deco emphasizes that the midfielder’s wish to continue with the club resonates with Barcelona’s ambitions to strive for championships, both in domestic competitions and on the European stage.
"Players such as Pedri are eager to be part of a competitive team; they aspire to win championships and, naturally, to obtain a substantial contract," Deco remarked. "Pedri's contract renewal is inevitable. He feels a strong sense of belonging at Barcelona, and having worked diligently to return to his top form, he is prepared to assist the team in attaining greatness."
As Gavi and Pedri are set to play central roles in Barcelona’s midfield for the foreseeable future, Deco’s comments highlight the club’s dedication to developing its homegrown players and assembling a team that can regain its past prominence. According to Deco, the essential factor is to keep these players content and driven to aid in Barcelona’s success moving forward.
