Gyokeres: Europe's Sought-After Striker and Transfer Target
Viktor Gyokeres is emerging as a top target for elite European clubs, with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Barcelona among those interested. His remarkable goal-scoring record and a hefty release clause make him highly sought-after.
Viktor Gyokeres is quickly establishing himself as one of the most desirable strikers in European football. The Sporting Lisbon forward showcased his outstanding form with a hat-trick in their remarkable 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City, bringing his total to an impressive 27 goals in just 21 appearances for both Sporting and the Swedish national team this season.
With a release clause of £83 million, Gyokeres is expected to be a prime target in the upcoming summer transfer market, as several top European clubs have already expressed interest. So, where will the 26-year-old potentially go?
Manchester United is closely monitoring the Swedish striker. The Red Devils are expected to make some squad decisions as Ruben Amorim, their potential future manager, takes charge. Although Rasmus Hojlund is currently United’s first-choice striker, he has struggled to find consistent form since his £72 million move from Atalanta in 2023. Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee, another summer signing, has struggled for game time and goals. Gyokeres, who thrived under Amorim at Sporting, could reunite with the manager at Old Trafford, though his hefty release clause might make a January move challenging.
When asked about the possibility of Gyokeres moving to United, Amorim stated, "Gyokeres is a Sporting player, which is a great club. He has done a lot for it, and he just needs to stay and finish the season there." Amorim also highlighted his respect for Sporting and his dedication to his current responsibilities. Interestingly, it was United's sporting director, Dan Ashworth, who facilitated Gyokeres' initial transfer to Coventry from Brighton, before Sporting acquired him for £17 million in 2023.
Arsenal, another club showing interest in Gyokeres, could join the competition for the striker. The Gunners are reportedly seeking a top-level striker, with Kai Havertz currently filling the role but still needing to demonstrate consistent leadership upfront. While Arsenal legend Ian Wright has mentioned that the team "needs a killer" in attack, Gyokeres could be the ideal match. However, Arsenal might consider the £83 million release clause too high, though reports suggest Sporting might be open to accepting between £50 million and £80 million for the striker next summer.
Currently, Gyokeres is expected to stay with Sporting for the rest of the season. With ten wins in ten matches, they are favored to clinch the Portuguese title once more, and their 4-1 triumph over Manchester City in the Champions League indicates they could advance far in the tournament. Gyokeres might opt to remain for another season to continue his development, or Sporting could choose to keep him for at least another year.
Besides Manchester United and Arsenal, Barcelona has also shown interest in Gyokeres. Reports from Spain suggest that the Catalan giants could arrange a deal valued between £50 million and £60 million by including Vitor Roque, who is currently on loan at Real Betis, in a player-plus-cash transfer. Barcelona is reportedly considering Gyokeres as a long-term successor for 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski.
