Boasting an illustrious career that encompasses over 450 top-flight English matches—ranking him just behind the esteemed Mike Dean—Atkinson retired from active refereeing in 2022, now assuming a fresh and influential position north of the border.

He assumes the position previously held by Jon Moss, a fellow former PGMOL colleague, who recently transitioned to the role of head of referees at Football Australia.
