Newcastle demand answers after fans face heavy-handed policing in Marseille

Newcastle Fans Raise Alarm After Marseille Police Use Force

Newcastle United have launched a formal complaint after their fans reported harsh treatment from police officers following the club’s 2–1 loss to Marseille. Supporters claim officers used pepper spray, batons, and shields in what they described as unnecessary force outside the Stade Vélodrome.

The club said the action left many fans distressed and trapped in unsafe areas. Newcastle stated that the behaviour was unacceptable and that supporter welfare should always be the highest priority.

Fans Held Back as Police Disrupt Exit Plan

Travelling fans were told they would remain inside the stadium for up to an hour for safety reasons. After that, they would be guided in groups of 500 toward the metro station and then to the designated fan area.

However, once the first group moved out, witnesses say police blocked the rest of the supporters and used force to hold them back. This caused crowd pressure in the upper concourse, where fans said crushing became clear.

Newcastle staff tried to intervene, but their efforts did little to calm the situation.

Supporters Share Distress and Shock

Season ticket holder Liam Phillips said he felt shaken by the heavy-handed approach. He described a long wait, pressure from the crowd, and police striking fans who could not move forward.

Another fan, Darren Curry, reported unsafe conditions on the concourse as toilets overflowed. He said fans stood in flooded areas while waiting, adding that the risk of a serious incident felt high.

Many supporters expressed anger and frustration over how they were handled and said the experience felt inhumane.

Marseille Responds to Accusations

Marseille insisted the match-day plan followed all UEFA guidelines. The club said fans were allowed access to toilets and refreshments and blamed the toilet overflow on vandalism.

However, the Football Supporters’ Association has called for urgent improvements in how Marseille manages away fans. Newcastle also said they expect answers from UEFA and local police.

Conclusion

The incident has raised major concerns about supporter safety and event management in Marseille. Newcastle United have taken a firm stance, demanding a full review and clear action to prevent any repeat of the distressing scenes witnessed after the match. With many supporters sharing similar experiences, the call for stronger safety standards and more respectful crowd control continues to grow.
